About HNMWA
The Hamilton Newcomers Mental Wellness Association (HNMWA) aims to build a welcoming community where newcomers can access culturally sensitive, barrier-free programs that help strengthen mental well being while nurturing resilience and building a sense of connection.

Meet Maria Ostapenko, Founder of HNMWA

Maria is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and the founder of the Hamilton Newcomers Mental Wellness Association (HNMWA). With a background in education, counselling, and years of hands-on experience supporting immigrants and refugees, she is deeply dedicated to ensuring that mental wellness becomes a cornerstone of a newcomer's journey.
As a former settlement language instructor, Maria witnessed how trauma, displacement, and isolation can negatively impact newcomers’ lives. She saw individuals trying to rebuild their lives while trauma from displacement made learning, working, and supporting their family challenging. This revealed the urgent need for mental health support.
Maria believes healing occurs when people are given the safety, respect, and care they deserve. With the support of volunteers and funders, HNMWA is more than a service; it is a movement toward creating a stronger, more compassionate community where newcomers don’t just settle, but flourish.
